Sunridge Mall Ducky from Calgary

Name: Sunridge Mall Ducky
Interests: Shopping and floating in duck races
Where to Find: Sunridge Mall in Calgary
Brand: Assurance
Price: $2.00

Too cool for you.

Since I am camping with my best friend this long weekend, I decided it’s only fitting that I post a rubber duck that we got together back in Junior High School (we have both been collecting ducks since grade 8). While I I was in Calgary visiting her, we went shopping at Sunridge Mall. There was a duck race taking place and the ducks in the race were ducks we didn’t have. Therefore, we asked if we could purchase the duckies and keep them. The organizers said yes.

Sunridge Mall Ducky has wings that stick up and have slight blushing orange hue to them. His beak is bright red. His eyes state that he is a teenager who will give you attitude. The backward and to the side ball cap shows how cool he is. He has the Sunridge Mall stamp on his belly. He was going to be number 0941 in the race until I removed him. “Void” is written on his bottom, so everyone knows that he was not entered in the ducky race and he did not win. I really need to go watch a duck race sometime. Does anyone know of any races in Edmonton?

High Roller Ducky from Edmonton

Name: High Roller Ducky
Interests: Bringing in the dough any way I can.
Where to Find: Vending Machine at Cineplex Odeon North Edmonton
Brand: Eye Poppers by Krazy Town
Price: $2.00 Cdn

Show me the money.

Since the Eye Popper ducks are so hard to open, I decided I must share my strategy for opening the little egg shaped containers:

  1. Get a hammer.
  2. Place the egg on the floor or better yet-outside.
  3. Smash the hammer onto the seam of the egg (exact middle) a few times.
Note: If the shell is breaking, continue to hammer at the shell until it is completely broken and you can safely remove the duck

4. Pick up the egg and pull it apart or unscrew it apart.

High Roller Ducky is all grey except for his 24kt gold beak (no it’s not real gold of course) and the 18kt gold “$”sign necklace hanging around his neck. The High Roller Ducky that I got has a worn off “$”sign necklace. It wasn’t painted thick enough.

8 Ball Ducky from Edmonton

Name: 8 Ball Ducky
Interests: Playing pool
Where to Find: Vending Machine at Cineplex Odeon North Edmonton
Brand: Eye Poppers by Krazy Town
Price: $2.00 Cdn

Don’t sink me.

Yesterday we took my daughter to see Brave. It was a very cute movie and we saw it at the North side Cineplex Odeon so that I could buy a few Eye Popper duckies after the movie. My daughter loves carrying around the little capsules of duckies. Since the containers are almost impossible to turn, twist and pull apart, I knew they weren’t choking hazards.

I spent $30.00 trying to get the complete set of ducks (toy machines bring randomness and rarity to trying to complete a collection). I received many duplicates and have a new set of 5 for my friend who also collects rubber ducks.

8 Ball Ducky is unique out of the 11 eye popper ducks because he is the only duck that has googly eyes like cookie monster. One eye is looking up to the right and the other is looking down to the left. He is all black including his beak and he has an 8 ball on his belly. Shake him to find out if he is a magic 8 ball.

Does anyone want to trade me? I still need the dracula ducky and the ducky in the suit (these are probably the rarest and only 7 were made or something).

Millcreek Pool Lifeguard Ducky from Edmonton

Name: Millcreek Pool Lifeguard Ducky
Interests: Keeping little kids safe all summer long.
Where to Find: Elephants Never Forget (no longer in business)
Brand: Schylling
Price: $4.50

Swim a lap to get a stamp so you can go in the deep end.

I remember the summer that my best friend and I spent the day at Millcreek Pool in Edmonton. We dove off the high diving boards many times, inhaled the sweet summer scent of sunscreen, purchased slurpees that the wasps invaded and dried off in the sun. My friend dried off a bit too much and sunburned her back really bad. Millcreek pool is down in the river valley and there isn't much shade. I can't wait to take my daughter to the pool this summer, but we are going to go in the evening so the UV isn't as high.

Millcreek Pool Lifeguard Ducky is wearing a blue ball cap so he doesn't get heat stroke. He also has on a red tank top and is holding a life preserver. There is also a whistle on a pink string around his neck.

Angel Keychain Ducky from Switzerland

Name: Angel Keychain Ducky
Interests: Being a perfect angle in ducky heaven.
Where to Find: Luzern, Switzerland
Brand: Out of the Blue
Price: $4.90 Swiss Franks

Hanging around

While we were in Luzern, Switzerland in September 2009, we visited Mt. Pilatus. I highly recommend taking the cograliway up this mountain. It goes straight up the top of the mountain and it is very scary to look down out of the back window (especially if you are in the caboose like we were).

Angel Keychain ducky is the same brand as Roman Glow in the Dark Ducky from Italy. They are both a German brand. Angel Keychain ducky has a silver halo on her head and she is looking up at it. She has two pretty silver wings and her beak is wide open with a red tongue hanging out of it.

Typically, I don’t write in books or on things I own even though I am a writer and write in a journal everyday. However, a friend at my work suggested that I write the date and place on the bottom of the rubber ducks that I buy. I decided to make an exception and write on the bottom of all of my RTW ducks. Angel Keychain Ducky is the only duck that still has legible writing on her bottom. The material and the pen did not bond well on any of the other ducks and the words smeared.

Moroccan Bud Ducky from Boston

Name: Moroccan Ducky
Interests: Eating dishes containing the many delicious spices available in Morocco.
Where to Find: FunUsual
Brand: Bud
Price: $12.95 US

“Colour your world” (as it says on the box)

In June 2010, I was in Boston for my second time for a business trip. My favorite place to shop in Boston is Faneuil Hall Marketplace. FunUsual is the best store in the marketplace. They sell all sorts of cool toys and Bud rubber ducks. I purchased 5 Bud ducks on my trip (don’t do the math to figure out the total that I spent). Most hobbies are quite expensive. If you are in Boston sometime, you also have to check out Peet’s coffee and tea. They have an excellent Masala Chai tea.

Moroccan Ducky is baby blue and has baby blue eyes. She has a yellow flower on her front and a beautiful sari type of skirt on her back with leaves, flowers and ruffles. She also has a flower over top of each of her ears or where her ears would be if she had them or you could see them. Do ducks have ears?

Roman Glow in the Dark Ducky from Italy

Name: Roman Glow in the Dark Ducky
Interests: Protesting (especially in the dark).
Where to Find: Rome, Italy
Brand: Out of the Blue
Price: $2.20 Cdn

Eerie

I found Roman Glow in the Dark Ducky in Rome of course. My husband and I were there in October 2009 while we were travelling around the world. The city was rather dirty and we stayed in a hostel with a shared fridge and someone ate our ice cream on us! I was not impressed. We tried to tour one day and ended up having to retreat to our hostel because there was a huge protest complete with police officers with the helmets and shields like you see on TV. I was really freaked out because we didn’t know the language and you never know when innocent bystanders can “get involved” without us even knowing we are involved. The phrase “wrong place at the wrong time” doesn’t exist for nothing.

Roman Glow in the Dark Ducky is about the same size as my other tiny glow in the dark duckies. She is rather sullen and has a chubby orange beak and round head.

Ducky Ear Buds from TinBox

Name: Ducky Ear Buds
Interests: Listneing to pop music while my owner runs.
Where to Find:TinBox
Brand: Cub
Price: $14.25

Along for the ear wax ride.

My aunt bought these ear buds for me a few years ago before the animal ear buds became popular. There are now cats, monkeys, ladybugs and almost any animal or shape imaginable. My Ducky ear buds are not very comfortable if you are moving around because the duck sticks out at an angle that rubs against your ear canal. Therefore, if I go for a run with them in, then they rub against my ears and make it hard to listen to my music. However, if you are sitting at your desk at work listening to a podcast then they are a bit comfier on your ears when you are not moving.

Ducky Ear Buds are a basic little tiny yellow rubber ducky with wings, black and white eyes and an orange beak. The wire is poked in the duck's bum. I imagine that isn't very comfortable for him either.

X-RAY Mini Bud Ducky from Jasper

Name: X-RAY Ducky
Interests: Living in the 80s. Halloween is my favorite day of the year.
Where to Find:Treehouse Toys and Gifts in Jasper
Brand: Bud
Price: $6.00 Cdn

Funny bone.

X-RAY ducky is one big black shadow except for his white bones, beak, eyes and head. This is the only skeleton ducky that I have, which is surprising given the number of Halloween ducks that are available. His box says “give a duck a bone.” He is part of the Bud 80s pop culture collection.

Bikerman Mini Bud Ducky from Jasper

Name: Bikerman Ducky
Interests: Living in the 80s. The YMCA is my favorite song.
Where to Find:Treehouse Toys and Gifts in Jasper
Brand: Bud
Price: $8.00 Cdn

It’s fun to stay at the ______.

Bikerman Ducky is really pricey at $8.00, so he much be rare or extra special in the Bud collection. He is all black including his beak. He has grey and black eyes. He is a huge tattoo fan and has the following tats: a rose on his bum, a love Bud tattoo with a heart on his back, Tuff love with a horseshoe and clover on his chest, an anchor on his left side and a cross and the word duck on his right.

What makes this Bud ducky extra special is the fact that he is the only bud ducky with a removable accessory (since Opal London, I am all about the accessories). As I was getting up, I thought I broke his hat off his head, but then I realized it popped off and it comes off. His black hat has a bird and a chain on it and it does not look like his hat would detach. His box says: “born to be wild."

Cloud 9 Mini Bud Ducky from Jasper

Name: Cloud 9 Ducky
Interests: Mojitos are my favorite drink. I love flying so I can see the clouds.
Where to Find: Treehouse Toys and Gifts in Jasper
Brand: Bud
Price: $6.00 Cdn

I am floating.

My husband went on a 5 day father’s day motorcycle trip with his Dad last week. They went to Lake Louise, Toad Rock, Golden and Jasper. My husband went rubber duck hunting at every stop and he managed to find a store that carried rubber ducks in Jasper. He also found a store in a small town in B.C. that had a few ducks. I am so spoiled.

Cloud 9 Ducky is turquoise with white clouds and blue, violet, orange and yellow rainbows patterned over her body. There are a few colours in the roygbiv spectrum missing from her rainbows. She has black and white eyes and a yellow beak. Bud ducks are quite expensive but $6.00 for the mini bud ducks is quite pricey when the bigger Bud ducks are usually $10.00 but the prices probably keep rising. Her box says: “There’s a silver lining behind every cloud and a rainbow after every storm.

Ducky Nail Brush from Opal London

Name: Ducky Nail Brush
Interests: Scrubbing the dirt out from under toenails.
Where to Find: www.opal-london.com
Brand: Opal London
Price: $2.50

Dirt succumbs to my bristles.

Ducky Nail Brush is a plastic duck as opposed to rubber. He has wings molded onto his his sides and surprised looking eyes. His smile makes him look a bit constipated. If you’re going to have a nail brush, it may as well be a rubber ducky. I also own an alligator nail brush, but it just isn’t the same.

Waterfall Rider Rubber Ducky from Value Village

Name: Waterfall Rider Ducky
Interests: Plummeting over the edge of waterfalls.
Where to Find: Value Village
Brand: Unknown
Price: 10 cents

My safety goggles have saved my life.

My aunt bought me this rubber ducky at Value Village. She found it in a large bag of 10 rubber ducks for a $1.00. She was certain that I didn’t have this rubber ducky and she was correct. There were actually two other rubber duckies that I didn’t have too. Second hand rubber duckies are the cheapest way to grow a collection.

Waterfall Rider Ducky is one with his inner tube. He is built right into it. His extra wide and long beak at the bottom makes him look like he has a goatee. His eyes are far too close together but his goggles are pretty cool and ensure that he can see as he goes over the edge of a waterfall.

Stick with Ducktape Rubba Duck

Name: Ducktape Rubba Ducky
Interests: Teaching my kids how to use ducktape to build and fix anything. Ducktape works way better than duct tape.
Where to find: Discontinued
Brand: Rubba Ducks
Price: $14.99

Happy Father's Day. Dad's can fix anything with ducktape.

Since it's Father's day, I wanted to pick a daddy duck for the post. Ducktape ducky was hatched on Oct 19th. He has an 'x' of ducktape across his bum and he is wearing clear safety glasses in case his taping gets out of hand. He has orange eyes that match his beak and is wearing an orange tool belt with a roll of duct tape wrapped around it.

Poem on his tag:

"Dt. Stands for Dr. Fix It.

A reliable dependable friend.

Always ripp'n and ready
to adhere to any
handyman's job.

Mini Keychain Duckies from Opal London

Name: Mini Keychain Duckies
Interests: Going to school and playing games.
Where to Find: www.opal-london.com
Brand: Opal London
Price: $5.00 Cdn
We’re boy and girl twins.

My daughter loves looping these Mini Keychain duckies around her thumbs. The pink one is neon bright and is looking straight ahead. She is so bright that you barely even notice her orange beak or that she has a little tongue sticking out of her mouth. The blue one is looking off to his right. He is much darker so his orange beak is quite noticeable. These ducks are a great size and add life to any set of keys.

Diamante Ducky from Opal London

Name: Diamante Ducky
Interests: James Pond. We have been dating for 2 years now. James always buys me diamonds.
Where to Find: www.opal-london.com
Brand: Opal London
Price: $12.90 Cdn
My eyes twinkle when I smile (it's the reflection of my diamonds).
Diamante Ducky is available in all white or white with black polka dots. I have had a thing for polka dots this year (especially on my daughter’s clothing), so I opted for the polka dots. Diamante has turquoise eyes and nice long lashes on top and on the side (7 on each eye). The polka dots on her cheeks make it look like she is blushing. She has bright pink lips and is wearing a diamond (okay they are really rhinestones to keep the price of the duck down) necklace that is removable.

Diamante’s box says “a dazzling bathing diva and dripping with diamonds.” Diamante should feel special because she is laying on the shiny outside layer of my baby blue grad dress. I also wore this dress to be my best friend’s Maid of Honour when I was 19.

His black hair is smooth on his head and he has a silver streak. There are three drops of blood on his breast and his shiny black cape is red on the reverse side. It has an elastic neck for easy removal. His box says he is the “prince of Duckness” and “fangs for the memory.”

Duck Fizz Ducky from Opal London

Name: Duck Fizz Ducky
Interests: Being the life of cocktail parties or any celebration.
Where to Find: www.opal-london.com
Brand: Opal London
Price: $12.90 Cdn
Pop the cork.

Duck Fizz is the only gold rubber ducky that I own. She has a silver beak and stunning emerald green eyes. Beside her right eye is a tiny green diamond tattoo or perhaps it is part of her eye make-up. The tinsel boa is a bit much because it makes it hard to see her face, but really nothing is too much for Duck Fizz. She has a bottle of champagne around her neck that is labelled “Petillant” which means “fizzy” in French. It also says “Millesime” which is a hotel in Paris and a restaurant in New York. It translates from French to English as vintage.” Vintage fizz. That has to be the best champagne.

Duck Fizz’s name is actually “Ducks Fizz but as a writer I cannot use this grammatically incorrect name. Her box says she is “bred for a champagne lifestyle..”and that she is “prepared to party.” The boa and the champagne bottle are removable ( just like the other Opal London ducks). I love that these ducks all have props

Ductor House M.D. Ducky from Opal London

Name: Ductor House M.D. Ducky
Interests: Making people feel better. Finding a cure.
Where to Find: www.opal-london.com
Brand: Opal London
Price: $12.90 Cdn

I have bags upon bags under my eyes.

Ductor House M.D. is the first and only rubber ducky I have ever seen with bags under his eyes, wrinkles between his eyes and stubble on his beak. The detailing does a great job of making him look like a worn out doctor. His grey hair and eyes even make him look weary. He has a hospital cross on his back and on his doctor’s jacket. He is wearing an operating mask that is removable and a pink stethoscope that is removable. His box says “the scrubbed up Hospital Quack and making a drama out of a crisis.”

Duck TANNIA Ducky from Opal London

Name: DuckTANNIA Ducky
Interests: Whipping my gorgeous locks of hair around arounds. Ruling the duck kingdom. Helping the citizens of Britain.
Where to Find: http://www.opal-london.com/Brand: Opal London
Price: $12.90 Cdn

You wish you had my curls.

I know I am always ranting about ducks with hair and how rare it is. However, ducks with hair seem to be becoming more popular. Duck TANNIA has the most hair I have ever seen on a rubber duck. It is also extremely crazy! She is half clown and half queen. Half of her hair is red and half of it is blue. She has a perfect part down the middle. Each curl is a perfect ringlet and I am jealous. I want those curls. Her crown sweeps her hair back so you can see her pretty blue eyes and long lashes that make her eyes pop. She has a strand of pearls around her neck and the British flag across her body. She is the craziest looking rubber duck I have ever seen. She’s a wild queen. Her box says she is the “queen of ducks and she rules the waves.”

James Pond Ducky from Opal London

Name: James Pond Ducky
Interests: Acting as a double agent, racing in cars and keeping the pond safe.
Where to Find: http://www.opal-london.com/
Brand: Opal London
Price: $12.90 Cdn

There is never a dull moment around the pond.

For my dad’s 50th birthday, I had a surprise James Bond theme party for him. He was James Bond and all our friends and relatives dressed up as Bond characters. I was Natalya on the top because she was the only woman who has never slept with Bond. My mom was Money Penny. We played Bond music all night and I even made a Bond trivia game. Of course my Dad’s team won.

Since Opal London is a British company, it seemed quite fitting that they had a James Pond ducky. James Pond’s box says “the name is Pond, James Pond...00 licensed to thrill...!" James Pond is all white with black thick eyebrows, grey eyes, a black tuft of hair and a black tuxedo complete with a cloth elasticized bow tie around his neck. This is a nice touch. He also has a red beak. I am declaring this week the official Opal London week (since I just received my new shipment of ducks from them on Friday).

Bobby Rubba Ducky from Toys R Us

Name: Bobby a Peel Rubba Ducky
Interests: Keeping the peace on London’s streets.
Where to Find: Toys R Us
Brand: Rubba Duck
Price: $15.00

British Bobbies are Best.

Bobby was hatched on February 5th. He is wearing his navy matte uniform complete with button and pocket detailing. He has a tie on too, but really his hat is the best. It’s tall and has the royal crest on it. His hair is a little odd and rather cropped. His serious expression says that he is all business. The poem is also a bit odd for this duck, perhaps they were running out of ideas.

Poem on his tag:

“When in a pinch
U legg it quick -
our Boys in Blue
in hot pursuit.

Ducking and diving
is in the bin;
your collar’s felt -
let’s be having U.

Name: Get Lucky Rubba Ducky
Interests: I can rub your lottery tickets for you and I love hanging out in Bingo halls.
Where to Find: Toys R Us
Brand: Rubba Duck
Price: $7.50

Find a four leaf clover.

I like the poems that come with the Rubba Ducks. It would have been fun to write them all. Another reason why I enjoy the poems is because they often tell you the sex of the rubber ducky too.

If you have a dirty mind, Get Lucky ducky has a rather rude name. Get Lucky hatched on St. Patrick’s day of course. He is a golden green glowing yellow colour (must be all the luck). He has green eyes and a 4 leaf clover on his bum.

Poem on his tag:

“The duck model to all ducks.
So lucky he’s kind of green.

And believes everybody should get Lucky.

Wins over and over at all
Ducktona duck races.

Interests: Picking daisies, chilling in the park on sunny days.
Where to Find: Christmas Store on Whyte Ave (no longer in business)
Brand: Rubba Duck

I am a flower child.

Daizee Ducky was hatched on August 15 and is a hippy. She has a daisy tattooed on her rear. Her eyes are as blue as her bandana and fresh daisies keep her bandana on her head. She looks like she is not quite all there (probably from smoking a bit too much). Her body is typical rubber ducky yellow and she has a super bright orange beak.

Poem on her tag:

“Hobbies include spending the day at the beach with friends, dancing and singing along with the radio.

Always the ‘flower duck,’ she loves to raid her

D. Cure Rubba Ducky from Edmonton

Name: D Cure - starts with Awareness Rubba Ducky
Interests: Raising money for the cure.
Where to Find: Christmas Store on Whyte Ave (no longer in business)
Brand: Rubba Duck
Price: $7.50 Cdn

Beat breast cancer.

This week is going to be the all Rubba Duck week. I’ve never done an entire week of the same brand of rubber ducks, so hopefully you won’t be tired of Rubba Ducks by the end of the week.

There used to be a Christmas store on Whyte Ave at least 12 years ago that sold Rubba Ducks. At one point, I was paying $15.00 Canadian per Rubba Duck. They are $10.00 in the US. However, I bought most of my Rubba Ducks on sale for $7.50 from the Christmas store. Toys R Us in the US and a few in Canada used to carry them too. At Toys R Us usually an associate would dig in the back for me and I would manage to find a few. Now, I can’t find them anywhere in Canada and since their website isn’t working, I am going to guess that they are out of business.

D. Cure is from the same wave as Duck Spa. I think there were at least 10 waves the last time I was on the Rubba Duck website. She hatched on Mother’s Day. She has a pink cancer ribbon on her bum and around her neck. She has a pink hat on and is batting her eyelashes. She has eyelids too, which is rare to see on a rubber duck. Her beak is bright lipstick pink and matches the cancer ribbons. She looks like she is ready to attend a high tea or fundraiser luncheon.

Poem on her tag:

“Breast Cancer is very serious.
but the disease can be beat.

The cure starts with awareness.
then office check-ups regularly.

Let’s all come together as one family.
to show love and support
and comfort if need be.”

Mini Ducky Magnets from Chapters

Name: Mini Ducky Magnets
Interests: Magnetizing to each other.
Where to Find: Chapters
Brand: www.4m2u.com
Price: $5.25

The tiniest rubber duckies.

I received these magnets from my friend for my 30th birthday. I think these are the tiniest rubber duckies that I have ever seen and that I own. I do have a glass ducky (looks like a real duck) that I bought in Venice that is half the size of these ducks.

My cat, Zuko loved to play with these magnets. Mini Ducky Magnets are a light glow in the dark looking yellow but they don’t actually glow in the dark. They have blue dots for eyes and orange beaks. The magnets are super tiny so it takes a few to secure a piece of paper to your fridge.

Colour Changing Trio Duckies by ALEX

Name: Colour Changing Trio Duckies
Interests: Bathing in a 37C tub-the perfect temperature for changing colour.
Where to Find: Amazon (I can’t remember the name of the toy store where I bought mine.)
Brand: Alex
Price: $7.99

We’re magical.

Nothing is more fun in the bathtub than playing with colour changing toys. The Colour Changing Trio Duckies make bath time that much more fun. The purple rubber ducky is the largest and has a yellow beak. She changes from purple to pink and this is the most notable transformation of the three. The green rubber duck with the purple beak changes to yellow but it really just looks like a lighter green. The pink rubber duck with the blue beak changes from pink to white and it’s rather noticeable. It’s too bad their beaks don’t change colour too. The two smaller ducks have wings that stick out and the larger duck has wings that stick to her sides.
